After watching movie, we usually sit here and chat for few minutes before she leaves for her home. We sit on this bench and observe the crowd in front of us: sometimes we share a smile whenever we see an old couple hand-in-hand, sometime we just shy away when we see a young couple or we share a familiar naughty grin (registering the fact that we have a strong liking for them) when we see kids playing & having fun.

We don’t talk much as we both do introspection on ourselves and on our relationship. But that day she turned to me and said, “Sandeep do you know what?”, I replied “No I don’t know what?”. “I want to”, she said, “marry you.” I looked suspiciously into her eyes and mumbled, “So you have decided” try to calm down the butterflies I was having in my stomach. I mean its by sheer luck that the person whom you love the most and think is the most beautiful of all is saying you the golden words “I want to marry you”

There was this strange feeling from the past and I said, “You don’t know me, you don’t know my past.” I continued, “Maybe I was having a relationship earlier, may be that relationship didn’t work out, may be I am not virgin, may be I am not capable enough of carrying out relationships” She replied, “I am not buying a car, where mileage, previous owners & a scratch on the body work are key considerations. You are my love, first and true.”

How to choose the right leader… when there is none! December 16, 2008

After the recent mumbai terror attacks, one of the suggestions that has emerged due to the blame game being played by the public & the political leaders is to choose the right leader.

But the dilemma is how to choose the right leader when there is none? What we lack as a nation is a leader who strikes chords with the masses but there is none. We need a leader who inspires the trust & transparency & justice & action (someone like Obama) but, in India, there is none. And if there is any, he is already suppressed & tied up by the bloody politics. Young generation is already detaching away from the politics (come on, in a class of 60 management students no one stands up to become a political leader, even me.)

Piyul Mukherjee of The Proact Blog writes ” It is time for all of us to BECOME THE LEADERS WE SEEK….” and she discusses about this now defunct ‘Lead India’ media campaign which gave us a list of few more names but no leader to whom we can look up to. To make one true leader is one aspect, but to make thousands courageous & true followers is another humongous task.

We can have a leader but can we become the courageous followers?

Coming back to the previous question, searching for the right leader when there is none is troublesome, I still remember last time I went to vote. I researched my candidate well, took opinion of old and young only to find out that not only the “Candidate” & “Party” that I voted to has lost, but many criminal charges has been framed by the winning party  against the candidate I voted to (subsequently my chosen leader went underground for months.)

It has been established, It is better to become the system than to break it.

Hence, question remains insoluble.

Cover page of "Inspirations" eBook I have just finished compiling all the poems & bringing down all the details of my new e-book to final. As per my plans & schedule, I have slated its release on 29th March, next year. I have been working on this book for quite sometime &  it was all-consuming project.

I finalized the layout & colour scheme as per the word 2007 template available from Microsoft website. The rest of the images I have taken are assumed to be in the public domain.

I have already released the draft version to the editors (my friends & expert English editors). The book will initially be released under Creative Commons license & subsequently released commercially.

The book will contain all the poems which I have published online, shared on many forums like Inspiration Peak etc., as well as new and fresh poems written by me over the past 1 year. Plus I am writing a few motivational & inspirational articles also.

Yes, I am thinking about releasing the book in PDF format on this blog, as well as on document sharing & online publishing web sites like docstoc.com & scribd.com.

If you have any ideas, comments or suggestions please feel free to share with me at sandeep.chopra [at] live.com or drop in a comment to let me know that you are interested in the book.

My Favourite 11 tips from the Litemind’s Personal Excellence Project December 5, 2008

Finally the list of 66 Personal Excellence Tips is up at litemind.com. The list is awesome and is an excellent example of Collective Intelligence. Almost all of the tips are straightforward, useful or have an insightful advice which can really be beneficial in one way or the other. Hats off to Luciano for this interesting project (and contest of course)

You may access the entire list here: http://litemind.com/best-personal-excellence-tips (I linked it out for my Indian friends & readers)

Anyway, here are 11 tips from that list which has become hot favourite for me, or resonates with me very well (as Luciano puts it, for that matter).

Bold is the original entry, with original list number, followed with commentary by me in italic, ended with link i(f any) leading to details.

  1. copyright (c) gapingvoid.com 1. Be careful when comparing yourself to others. (#2) Never compare your inside with somebody else’s outside (as Hugh MacLeod of gapinvoid.com puts it, for that matter). I sometime start comparing myself with others only to feel inferior and downgraded, comparison is no justification when the entire pursuit for excellence is on fast track. Try to excel in such a way that even people start saying “Awesome!!! No comparison”

2. Persist until it pays off. (#3)  Long time ago, I read somewhere that some research shows that people REALLY succeed if they persists and stick to their goals. But persist in a right fashion in a right endeavour. Instead of persisting in a impossible endeavour try to persist in something small and be capable of achieving it. According to my fav management guru, Peter F. Drucker  just do away with the ideas, products or plans which does not seem to work and free up resources which could be used for new endeavours.

3. Eat Chocolate.(#5) I love chocolates and some research shows that our heart pulse rate while eating chocolate is same as when we are lip kissing our partner. Just imagine lip kissing your partner while the hell of deadlines & pressure is mounting up. Ok if you don’t have girl friend don’t worry just have chocolate and enjoy yourself. (note: I do believe that chocolate has some kind of soothing effect)

4. Serve. (#9) The best career advice I ever had was from my school St. Thomas  whose Tag line sums it very well “To Serve With Love”

5. Practice being selfish.(#11) I am one of the proponents of the idea of putting your mask first in an airplane emergency before you do for others. Be self-dependent & selfish in the first place so as to begin helping others We had a huge hot debate on this topic in our class, unfortunately the lecturer had to leave before concluding the entire thing.

What is Target Zero? (know more about Target Zero)

To quote from the previous post on Target Zero:

Print out posters with Target Zero written on them & paste them in your room, cubicle or office.  Make a wallpaper of Target Zero text and set it as your desktop background. Make a smaller version of it, transfer it to your mobile & set it as your phone’s wallpaper. Make a sticker of Target Zero (hey you can use some glue) open up your clock & paste it over the background of the clock.

For those people who are going to implement Target Zero I am posting two tools that I use for myself.

  1. Target Zero Poster Template: Download the Target Zero poster template from below, edit it in Microsoft Word and get a print out of it. Now paste it where ever so that it may remain in your sight & attention(even toilet is not a bad idea, I believe)
  2. Target Zero Worksheet Template:  Documenting, I insist. This worksheet template will allow you to document your entire Target Zero, let you set the date, and jot down actions that may help in achieving the Target.

Based on the popularity of these tool I will post two other tools i.e. Desktop Wallpapers & Wallpapers for mobile.

Here are the links to download:

Target Zero Work Sheet

I posted these tools in a bid that it may be helpful to you, if you have any suggestions or improvements or any comments you may want to share please don’t hesitate to post them below.

For complete coverage of the entire terror attack please see November 2008 Mumbai Attacks on Wikipedia.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/images/photo/2008/11/26/1127-MUMBAI/25962244.JPGI STRONGLY CONDEMN THE MUMBAI ATTACKS. My condolences to the families of those who died in the attack as well as those super heroes who died while serving their country as well as protecting the ordinary people & citizens of India.

My kudos to the Mumbai Police who reacted within seven minutes of the attack as well as NSG (National Security Guards) who emerged like super heroes and accomplished the mission of flushing out the terrorists. I am particularly disappointed with the death of Hemant Karkare, the Anti-Terror Squad chief.

The entire event was full of traumas and tragedies, it was equally devastating to watch the entire ghastly episode of terror encounter unfold live on the television.

WHO IS TO BLAME? Government for lack of concern for the security of the citizens, Local  government for the inaction to the intelligence input (even some fishermen association wrote to them apprehending the import of RDX), local citizens for turning blind eye to the suspicious activities (they were staying for more than a month in the Niraman House, their suspected heart quarters where they hatched the plan) or the Hotel Management for poor security checks & implementation (how on this earth they got the entire map of the hotel, look how they behaved like they know this place as it was their home)

It is equally unacceptable & shocking on the part of the management of the large hotels why they don’t install  a suitable baggage screening system (like that we have in airports) to check the baggage of each check-in customers. Of course, past teaches us lessons and SOMETIME WRONG LESSONS.

Pakistan did, has and will always have some sort of connection with the every terror  attack in the country. DENYING IS NO JUSTIFICATION. What the hell is going wrong with the External Affairs Ministry of India and honourable Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. EAM should get their priorities right with the Pakistan Government, agenda is simple, no more peace talks unless Pakistan stops sponsoring terror from their land.

Mr. Manmohan Singh, I thank you very much for the 1992 economic reforms. Sir, After 10 years from now I would like to thank you for the Security Reforms you can make for the country, even now when your term is left no more than 6 months from now.

I know it is easy to type out criticism & make suggestions but it is quite disturbing to hear the news of the death of many people due to these terror attacks. I know it is easy to lead the entire class to stand up and observe silence for 2 minutes, then to stand in front of death eye-to-eye, when any moment can be your last, to observe ear deafening silence occasionally upset by the bullets & hand grenades. But believe me, my stomach churned when I read the news alert on my Mobile: Mumbai Under Siege, I clenched my fists whenever I saw live action or news of death on TV, my heart beat tantamount to the adrenalin rushing through my nerves, I WANT THESE IDIOTS TO LEARN A LESSON, CRUSH THEM TO DEATH.

As is the quote of some anonymous guy, never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. I want each and every Indian to stand up for something they believe (terrorists have no place in our world) rather than fall for anything (as useless as terrorism.)

On that sad note I would like to salute to that unknown guy, the man in uniform who died for the goodwill of his country, who breath his last while serving his nation, whose heart pumped the passionate blood into the nerves while he stood with finger on the trigger to wait for the moment he could kill the terrorist and free his fellow men from the never ending trauma not knowing he was standing there to be doomed to martyrdom.

At last two men died in the battle of good and bad, one died the death of a hero and another the death of a looser. One can make any ordinary mother to hold her head high with pride, and the other can make any ordinary mother to retreat into shame. One fought and died for his country for higher good, the other died the death of fool with no apparent reason. At last I saw a dead body of man laden with beautiful flowers carried over with thousands of hands, wrapped in tri-color, carried with warm feelings in heart and tears of sorrow in eyes, to be buried with the millions of  wishes of unknown citizens. At last I saw  a dead body of a man resembling the same of a maniac dog who died last night with no fathomable reason being dragged to the vehicle better suitable to be used as municipality trash van. One was bid adieu with salutation through gun shots & fires up to the sky, and the another one with the curses of each soul of this entire world.

Of course it was because of their deeds, my dear reader, one was a Brave Police Man and the other was a foolish terrorist
